Combination / Advent / Cute / Order / Advertising Impact (Japanese: 「組み合わせ」 「降臨」 「かわいい」 「注文」 「宣伝効果」) is the sixteenth episode of Azumanga Daioh.
With the culture festival approaching, Tomo comes up with an idea of a haunted house cafe, which is considered but ultimately decided against. Working from the successful idea of the stuffed animal exhibition from the previous year, a stuffed animal cafe is agreed upon. Chiyo starts panicking when the class repeatedly procrastinate in preparations. Sakaki designs hats inspired by Chiyo-Father. Chiyo appears in a cute penguin costume. Yukari jeers at Nyamo since the latter does not have a cute student like Chiyo in her homeroom. Kimura requests Kagura to let him borrow a hat, only to drive away customers with his unappealing advertising. Chiyo and Osaka check out the themes of other classes while on their break. The two visit both a takoyaki and a taiyaki food booth. In both occasions, Osaka had to feed Chiyo due to her lack of mobility in the penguin costume. They return to the stuffed animal cafe, shocked to see it packed with customers who saw Chiyo in her penguin costume at the food booths.
Chiyo notes that just like last year, a haunted house and café are suggested for the class exhibit.
A comment box is needed once more and Yomi gets annoyed at Tomo who is about to put a ¥5 coin in it again.
Kagura mentions Class 3's previous stuffed animal-themed exhibition.
A small plushie with the appearance of Chiyo-chichi is shown. It is revealed that Sakaki named it the "Father Hat" after Chiyo-chan's father that showed up in her dream.
Chiyo is referred to as class president again.
Chiyo dressing up as a penguin recalls her penguin maid from episode 8, but in the manga this happened before the dream. The outfit also appeared in Kaorin's dream in the same episode, and first appeared in the opening theme. Sakaki and Kagura's outfits also first appeared in the opening theme before appearing in this episode.
A picture on the banner above the stuffed animals for sale shows a cat bearing a striking resemblance to one of Sakaki's drawings.
The cultural festival arranged by the classes is an event that occurs in many real-life Japanese schools. The event of wearing costumes is also described as "cosplaying" in the episode preview.
Chiyo suggests having all the waitresses dressing up as traditional Japanese monsters, and Osaka wants her specifically to wear a Nurikabe (a wall monster) costume. Osaka also imagines herself dressed up as a Karakasa, a one-legged umbrella monster.
Osaka refers to her own, "better" ideas as 'sure-fire home runs'.
The class eventually settles for a stuffed animal café idea.
A male student advertises for balloon fishing. This is a game where there are small rubber balloons bobbing in water. The balloons are usually only a couple of inches in diameter and are weighted with a little water inside. They have a string and loop attached to them so they can be fished up. The challenge is to fish them up using a hook attached to a piece of twisted paper. If the twisted paper gets wet, it is unlikely that it will bear the weight of the balloon containing the water, so the player must be careful to lower only the hook into the water to catch the loop attached to the balloon. This is a very typical game at festivals.
Osaka tells Chiyo to join her in buying and eating lots of snacks. The phrase Osaka uses for "buy and eat snacks" is "kaigui", which is a word that usually describes students buying snacks on their way home from school. This behaviour is considered to be poor manners, because students should be eating properly at mealtimes and have those meals provided for either by their family or school. It is also considered wasteful, because it means spending ones allowance on junk food. So here, Osaka is playfully suggesting doing something that is generally off limits, even though buying snacks at culture fest booths is a normal thing to do and is not considered to be bad form.
Why Osaka wanted Chiyo to dress up as the Nurikabe.
Why Chiyo let her hair down and spoke in an accent.
If Kimura ever returned the Father Hat he borrowed from Kaorin.
Tomo teases Chiyo by imitating her hairstyle and bragging about her excellent test scores and rich family, which annoys Chiyo terribly.
Osaka comes up with a strange way of combining all the suggestions – a café full of dead cute animals.
When Chiyo gets stressed and asks somebody to turn back the clock, Osaka literally attempts to start doing so.
Chihiro asks Kaorin what Sakaki's design for the culture festival is supposed to be. Kaorin brushes her bangs into her face and does an impression of Sakaki when she explained the same thing to Kaorin.
Instead of working, Tomo plays with the Kamineko and Neco Coneco plushies.
Chiyo's penguin costume is admired by everybody.
Kimura borrows Kaorin's Father Hat and scares away customers by wearing it in the hallways.
Chiyo and Osaka explore the culture fest and since Chiyo can't eat in her costume, Osaka feeds her takoyaki and taiyaki, which attracts crowds due to Chiyo's cuteness and eventually becomes what Kagura describes as "too effective advertising", as the Class 3 cosplay cafe is swamped.
Oh … Hey, I'm fine with whatever! You know, that whole respecting the students' independence thingy!
Oh, I know!! How about we combine the two and do a haunted house café!?? When people are having tea and stuff, we'll go 'BOO!!' and scare them!! A café where you can't have tea in peace … THIS COULD BE IT!! OUR BREAKTHROUGH IDEA!!
We can just lump all of it together!! And set up a café with like scary ghosts of cute animals!
Hey! What's the deal with all the useless activity going on over here??
— Yomi (to Osaka)
So what's this? Oh, something you drew, huh? [Sakaki nods] It's kinda too peaceful for the background of the ultimate battle to save the earth, but I guess it oughta help to set the mood a little better!
— Tomo (while playing with stuffed animals)
Alright, let's get to it! But I'm still a little nervous … Will the customers enjoy our stuffed animal café? … That kind of attitude just won't do! Do not give in to the pressure, and let's enjoy the once-a-year culture fest to the fullest possible extent!! Some exercise might be a good idea. [starts exercising and falls over]
— Chiyo (to her class)
Oh really, now? I'll have to be careful since it's something you guys put together.
— Nyamo (to Osaka, when she said their café was cute)
Huh, you don't know!? I happen to be Chiyo-chan's homeroom teacher. I bet you would have liked to have a kid like that in your class, wouldn'tcha?? I know you would have!! [starts laughing]
— Yukari (explaining to Nyamo why she's acting proud)
