Ep 18

Yomi returns with stories from her recent trip to Hokkaido after the winter break. Much to Tomo's displeasure, Yomi boasts about the things she experienced such as her first trip in an airplane, an all-you-can-eat crab buffet, and the outdoor hot springs in Noboribetsu. During her bad experience throughout the day, Tomo pays for bubble tea at a vending machine, but it pours the beverage without a cup under it. Yomi on the other hand, receives two cups when purchasing her own. During lunchtime, Tomo insists that Yomi will splatter her broth while she is eating udon, only for her conjecture to backfire, causing Tomo to rampage wildly until accidentally hitting Ms. Yukari in the face with a lunch tray. After lunch, Osaka is seen reading a magazine of popular attractions, one of which being information on a new amusement park. Yomi later buys the amusement park guidebook, excited yet nervous about it. However, she develops a cold come nightfall, but calls Tomo informing her sickness. Tomo uses this opportunity to seek revenge for Yomi boasting about their trip. Yet Chiyo is sympathetic for Yomi not to be a part of the experience. The next day, Chiyo brings a souvenir for Yomi, only to see a mug with a picture of the girls on a roller coaster with an empty seat, as a joke by Tomo to show Yomi's absence. Chiyo later gives her the intended souvenir, a snowglobe with the feline mascot of the amusement park in the center atop a snow covered hill. The girls rush outside as snow begins to pile up, as they engage in a snowball fight. Yomi unfortunately develops another cold nevertheless.

Adapted From[]

  • Osaka mentions her New Year's dream from the year before (where she killed Chiyo by removing her pigtails incorrectly).
  • The girls' athletic abilities are reflected even in how skilled they are at throwing snowballs.

Cultural References[]

  • Tomo receives a phone call from Yomi when she was going to Hokkaido, and later when she had to tell her that she couldn't come to Magical Land.
  • When Yomi asks the others what they did during the winter break, Chiyo says she relaxed at the warm heated table, also known as a "kotatsu." In most areas of Japan, because the winters are not very harsh, homes often do not have central heating. Thus, in the winter, the kotatsu becomes a central gathering area for the family. A kotatsu is fundamentally a low table with a heating unit in the middle underneath and a blanket covering the sides to keep the warmth in. In the old days, the heating unit would be fueled with charcoal, but these days, it is generally an electric space heater.
  • Yomi discusses flying in airplanes with the others.
  • Yomi hands out souvenirs, in Japan it is very common to do this after going on a trip. Chiyo and Osaka receive packages saying "White Friend, Black." This is a reference to a well-known Hokkaido souvenir called "White Lover." It is a gift pack of white chocolate sandwiched between delicate cookie-type pastries. The "black" version is the milk chocolate version. Of course, Osaka and Chiyo's reaction to the packaging is still due to the fact that it says white and black together. Chiyo and the others also bought souvenirs after the amusement park visit.
  • Yomi gives Sakaki a can of bear stew. There is an actual product which looks exactly like this bear stew, except that is is actually curry, not stew.
  • Yomi, Tomo and Yukari discuss Noboribetsu Karls. Noboribetsu is a famous hot springs region in Hokkaido, while the Karls is a specific area in the Noboribetsu region named after Karlsbad in the Czech Republic.
  • Tomo uses a vending machine.
  • Osaka reads information pamphlets in which she hears about the amusement park Magical Land for the first time, where the gang decides to go together.
  • In the next episode preview, Osaka mentions how they "call youth the blue spring". The Japanese word for "youth" (as in "someone's youth"), is "seishun," which is literally written as "blue spring". In Japanese, blue can also be interpreted as "green," as in "being green" and not mature yet. This is why Osaka starts asking about various colors of spring.

Unanswered Questions[]

  • What Osaka's strange dream was about.
  • When and to where Chiyo flew in an airplane.
  • When Yomi heard about Sakaki liking bears.
  • How Chiyo knew about Magical Land from before.
  • What Yomi did when Tomo annoyed her so much that she lost it and Tomo declared her mad.

Memorable Moments[]

  • Yomi delights in bragging to the others about her trip to Hokkaido, which annoys Tomo.
  • When Tomo and Yukari hear about Yomi eating crab and Genghis Khan in Hokkaido, they torment her about it endlessly out of jealousy.
  • A vending machine fails to give Tomo a cup and just pours the milk and tea down anyway. When Yomi uses it, she gets her tea but with an extra cup, upsetting Tomo terribly.
  • Tomo loses her temper when Yomi succeeds with eating curry udon without splashing it all over the place, making a scene and intending to smack Yomi in the face with her lunch tray, but she hits Yukari instead which makes Yukari furious.
  • Yomi attempts to hide how excited she really is about Magical Land, but when she is alone, she buys a guide book and spends an entire afternoon reading it on a park bench, catching a cold and later developing a fever.
  • Chiyo suggests that they cancel the trip and visit Yomi instead, which she secretly hopes for, but Tomo convinces the others that Yomi would rather want them to have fun and they go anyway.
  • When it starts snowing, the girls have a snowball fight and Yomi gets a fever again.
