Ep 23

The girls cheering on Sakaki.

The athletics carnival for this year is just around the corner, and Osaka is looking forward to the competitive bread eating challenge, which is one of the new events of the festival. As she wonders how the bun is hung from a string in the challenge, Kagura inadvertently frightens her when she supposes a fish hook is used. Tomo asks Yukari to reward juice if the class wins, only for the latter to oppose for not profiting a gamble against Nyamo. Kagura is excited on the day before the athletics carnival, however she incidentally collapses the tent Chiyo and Yomi were pitching up. Feeling responsible, she assists in resetting up the tent. Kagura angers Yomi when she points out her absence of fattening bias while preparing to eat a large plate of katsudon. When the day of the athletics carnival arrives, Kimura suddenly springs up expressing his appreciation for girls in bloomers. During a costume race, Tomo and Chiyo dress up like a police officer and prisoner, respectively, and they win due to Tomo pushing all the competition out of their way. During the competitive bread eating challenge, Osaka is thoroughly confused due to the five different selections of bread. For the cheerleading contest, Kaorin meets with Yomi and Chiyo wearing a gakuran, but her emotions shift drastically when Tomo mentions that Sakaki is wearing one as well. Later, Chiyo worries that she may slow her team down for the relay race between classes, but is calmed down when reminded that Sakaki and Kagura are on her team. Tomo falls back from the lead, due to having depleted her stamina since before the race started, before passing the baton to Yomi. Osaka, using her strategy of running with open arms, fails to stop others from passing her, but Kagura later makes up for her lagging colleagues with her speed. Chiyo, on the other hand, despite giving her best, quickly falls behind, prompting a boy from another class to insult her. To make up for her friend, Sakaki speeds uncannily ahead of the pack as soon as Chiyo hands her the baton. Unfortunately, Yukari stands as the anchor, and with Nyamo going up against her, she is guaranteed to lose until Yukari tramples her down as soon as she is overtaken, making Yukari's class to finish in last place.

Adapted From[]

Azumanga Daioh Volume 4/Chapter 36

  • Chiyo mentions that the sports festival events have changed completely since the year before.
  • Just like the years before, Tomo proposes that Yukari treat them to juice if they win, and Yukari wonders if she really loves juice that much, having asked for it so many times.
  • When she sees Tomo dressed up in a police uniform, Kagura says "You could practically join the ICPO right now!" because Tomo said previously that she had plans to do so.

Cultural References[]

  • When Osaka gets excited to hear about the changed list of sports festival events, she drops her sweet bean paste. After this, she makes a motion with her hands. This means "We'll set that aside for now" or "Never mind that, let's move along."
  • The reason Yukari calls Osaka "Mr. Yukichi" in this episode is that Yukichi Fukuzawa is the founder of what is now Keio University and his face is on the ¥10,000 bill. Yukari is, in other words, using Osaka as a metaphor for money.
  • The bloomers that Yomi complains about are not actually used in Japanese schools anymore as of today, but they used to be.
  • One of the sports festival events is a costume race. Tomo dresses up as a policewoman and Chiyo as the culprit she has just arrested.
  • The cream bread used in the bread eating race refers to a bread generally shaped like a crown with very blunt corners.
  • Chiyo and Yomi both dress up as cheerleaders for the cheerleading contest. Sakaki, Tomo and Kagura also do, but in boys' uniforms. The term Kaorin uses for these specifically refers to boys' school uniforms with closed collars and more often than not, a long top and baggy pants.
  • Pikanya, the word Osaka uses for "Yamapikarya" (Iriomote Cat) in the next episode preview, is derived from "nya" (the sound cats are said to make in Japan, similar to "meow").

Unanswered Questions[]

  • Why Kagura woke up so late, as she claims.
  • Whom the man is that says "Ready?" before the start of an event.
  • What crime Chiyo, theoretically, was meant to have committed.
  • From what class the boy taunting Chiyo's running ability was.

Memorable Moments[]

  • The third sports fest of high school begins.
  • Kagura accidentally knocks over the tent that the others had struggled with it. Tomo (who was partly to blame) starts teasing her about it, but Kagura gets responsible, is even brought to tears, and suggests she set it up all by herself.
  • Yomi is annoyed because Kagura and Osaka both declare that they cannot gain weight easily – because it doesn't take much to get Osaka full and Kagura has high fat burning. Neither of these is true in Yomi's case.
  • Osaka puts a lot of energy into preparing herself mentally for the bread-eating race, but loses since she gets distracted when she is asked to pick from a variety of flavours.
  • Tomo starts out in the lead of the relay, but then everyone passes her because she used up her energy too fast.
  • Sakaki almost makes sure Class 3 wins the relay by passing even boys, track and field people, but Yukari is their anchor, and she is easily passed by Nyamo, despite her perseverance. Class 3 ends up in last place of the athletic festival.

16px-Quote1 No. Isn't it more like … more like bait? You know, with a fish hook? 16px-Quote2
Kagura (to Osaka, on how the string was supposed to be tied around the bread)
16px-Quote1 Hmm. Do you honestly love juice that much, Tomo? 16px-Quote2
16px-Quote1 Everyone was working so hard at it, and Kagura had to go and mess it ALL UP!! 16px-Quote2
Tomo (on the tent)
16px-Quote1 WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!? 16px-Quote2
Kagura (to Tomo, after she knocked her over)
16px-Quote1 You see, I'm the type who never gains weight no matter how much I eat. In fact, if I don't eat, I don't have any energy, so it's bad. 16px-Quote2
Kagura (to Yomi)
16px-Quote1 Oh yeah, is that so!? Then why don't you go eat a hundred bowls of pork cutlet!? 16px-Quote2
Yomi (to Kagura)
16px-Quote1 I love … those pants … very very much. [in English] I … like … you. 16px-Quote2
Kimura (to Kagura)
16px-Quote1 Is pushing … allowed? 16px-Quote2
Kagura (to Yomi and Osaka, on Tomo)
16px-Quote1 Yay for us. 16px-Quote2

Yomi (on Tomo, before the relay)
16px-Quote1 Yeah, enough about the juice already! 16px-Quote2
Yomi (to Tomo)
