Osaka and Chiyo look at shisas. These are Okinawan mythological creatures, resembling something between lions and dogs. They are supposed to keep evil away and are frequently seen in the form of statues, like here. They are frequently seen in pairs, one with its mouth open to send away evil spirits and one with its mouth closed to keep in the good spirits.
Chiyo and Sakaki look at small shisa figurines, and talk about cute wildcat souvenirs.

Tomo is very amused by souvenirs such as chinsukou and Ukon tea because "chinsukou" sounds similar to the Japanese word for penis (chinko) and Ukon resembles the word "unko" (poop).
In this chapter is the single occurence of Osaka saying the word "Yamapikarya" (wildcat) right, later she keeps pronouncing it "Pikanya" (because of "nya" or "nyan" being the Japanese word for "meow").
The most prominent event in this chapter is probably Sakaki's meeting with Maya, an Iriomote cat and the first feline she has tried to pet without it biting her. She even gets to hug him and take him with her for a while. This is one of the few chapters where Sakaki shows a lot of emotion – when she's with Maya, she seems happier than ever before, and when she has to say goodbye to him, she cries.
